Our authors

Hello Bacalar is an independent travel guide to Bacalar, Mexico. Three editors share the guides by subject. We describe our work as it is: we compile and verify information from official sources, operators and published research, date every guide, and correct it when something changes.

Julia Medina

Editor

Julia edits Hello Bacalar and keeps the guides consistent: what the lagoon is, where to stay, what to eat and how the town grew from a Maya settlement into today's lagoon destination.

Every figure she publishes (distances, prices, opening seasons) is checked against an official or primary source, and each guide shows the date it was last reviewed.

Covers

  • Bacalar Lagoon and the town
  • Where to stay and where to eat
  • History of Bacalar
  • Fact-checking and updates

Guides

Tomás Aguilar

Transport and trip planning

Tomás covers how to reach Bacalar and when to go: flights to Chetumal, Tulum and Cancún, ADO buses, the Tren Maya, driving times and the dry and rainy seasons.

He works from timetables and data published by the operators and by Mexico's weather service, and flags clearly when a figure could not be confirmed.

Covers

  • Flights and airports
  • Buses, Tren Maya and driving
  • Weather and best time to visit

Guides

Clara Whitmore

Nature and activities

Clara writes about what to do on and around the lagoon: boat tours, kayaking, Los Rápidos, photo spots, and the difference between Bacalar's lake and lagoon.

She puts the rules that protect the lagoon's stromatolites first, and relies on published research and the conditions set by local operators.

Covers

  • Tours and activities
  • Los Rápidos
  • Photography spots
  • Lagoon ecology and stromatolites

How we work

  • Every price, distance and timetable comes from a source we can name, and the guide shows when it was last reviewed.
  • When sources disagree or a figure cannot be confirmed, we say so rather than guess.
  • Some links earn us a commission (GetYourGuide). It never changes what we recommend or the facts we publish.
